It evolved into a certain publicity, a certain kind of – in Mexico we say, morvoso, morbidity. People would be interested in watching the film just because of that. They went to see it because of freedom of expression.Do you think you would make a good priest?I don’t know. I mean, I think there’s lots of things that I could be strongly against Like celibacy Celibacy comes from a very political, economical place. Do you know why celibacy exists? It was because the priests before used to have families, and their property they gave to the kids when they died.

Then the kids separated from the church and the church ended up having no properties. And so the church said, “OK, let’s establish this thing called celibacy, in which you might have kids or whatever but nothing is legal.” So all the property stays within the church. That’s the origin of celibacy and I think that’s very ridiculous. And then they try to find some celestial reason for why celibacy exists and I think that’s just obscene. Obscene to the times that we’re living in because it’s actually costing people’s lives, you know. And who cares? I don’t care if a priest has a family and kids. I’m glad, I mean, it’s fine.Three or four years ago, if you would have asked the average person about Mexican cinema they probably wouldn’t have been able to name any movies.

Now, with Amores Perros, Y Tu Mam?ambi?and Padre Amaro, everyone’s aware of that country’s films. Can you talk about your popularity and how Mexican cinema has emerged? We’re talking about three films but … what’s definitely happening is that Mexicans are going to watch Mexican films Economically that works And then the rest is cultural You know, there’s a need to tell our stories. There’s a need to listen to ourselves and to be heard as well, and I’m glad that these films are travelling around the world.
