Analysts surveyed by Reuters had expected the jobless rateMXUNR=ECI to decline to 4.87 percent from the 5.25 percentposted in April. Mexico’s export-oriented manufacturing sector has shed tensof thousands of jobs as U.S. demand for Mexican-made productssuch as cars and televisions has fallen sharply. The malaise in the export-oriented parts of the economy hasfiltered into other sectors as consumer confidence has plungedto record lows this year. The Mexican government expects the economy to contract 5.5percent this year, while the Organisation for EconomicCooperation and Development said on Wednesday it could shrinkup to 8 percent.

PHILADELPHIA, June 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — As part of our effort toadvance the common good, promote volunteerism and strengthen nonprofitsthroughout the region, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania has launched anew Web site that connects volunteers to projects in the Greater Philadelphiaarea.Created through a partnership with VolunteerMatch, a national nonprofitorganization that makes it easier for people to volunteer with causes theysupport, United Way’s new site gives visitors the ability to search throughlocal and national volunteer listings to find an opportunity based on theirindividual interests and location.

United Way’s Web site,, pulls from VolunteerMatch’s network of over65,000 participating nonprofit organizations to provide volunteeropportunities. According to a 2008 report from the Corporation for National and CommunityService (CNCS), Pennsylvania ranks 39th among U.S. states with an averagevolunteer rate of 25.1%, a marked decrease from previous years. The reportalso shows that nationally 64.3% of volunteers had left the organizationbefore the end of the first year of service (Philadelphia has a volunteerretention rate of 65.5%). As with paid employment, a poor fit betweenvolunteers and organizations increases the probability that a volunteer willnot have a positive experience and for nonprofits, that can cause substantialadditional costs resulting from volunteer turnover. With the launch of thisnew web service to link volunteers to an opportunity that’s right for them,United Way hopes to see that rate go up. “The donation of time and talent through volunteerism is a valuable resourcefor nonprofits in our region,” said Jill Michal, President and CEO of UnitedWay of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
